Olen piirtänyt palavalla koivun tuohella paperille. Tuohi ei kosketa paperia vaan savussa oleva noki tarttuu paperiin. Liekki ja kädenliike yhdessä tekevät piirrosjäljen ja muodostavat kuvan. Kutsun tätä tekniikkaa nokipiirrokseksi. Haluan käyttää sanaa piirtäminen maalaamisen sijaan.
Aloitin tekniikan kehittämisen vuonna 2018 kipsimuotin nokeamiskokemusten innoittamana. Kirjasinmetallivaluja varten kipsimuotti kosteuseristetään nokeamalla. Olen usein ihaillut nokijälkiä valkoisella kipsillä ja miettinyt miten voisin käyttää tätä taiteessani.
Käytän työskentelyssäni hyväksi tekniikan sattumanvaraisuutta. Parhaimmillaan lopputulos yllättää ja ilahduttaa. Sattuma on hyväksyttävä tasavertaiseksi työkaveriksi.

Soot Drawings
I make drawings on paper using burning birch bark. Although the birch bark does not come into direct contact with the paper, the soot contained in the smoke adheres to the surface. The flame and movement of my hand together create the lines of the drawing and form the image. I call this technique soot drawing, for I prefer to use the word ‘drawing’ rather than ‘painting’.
I began to develop the technique in 2018. I was inspired by experience of applying soot to a plaster mould. In casting metal type a plaster mould is made resistant to moisture by the use of soot. I was intrigued by the traces of soot left on the white plaster and considered how I might use this process in my work.
I take advantage of the technique’s random character. At best the result surprises and enchants. Chance should be accepted as an equal workmate.
